SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):438 (abstract no. PD0362). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370727 AB OBJECTIVE: To assess the need for HIV education among male heterosexuals applying for immigration to the United States. METHODS: As part of their medical examination process for U.S. immigration, 3,266 consecutive mostly Hispanic (90%) applicants were examined at San Francisco Bay Area health clinics. Included for this study was a subset of 1,317 heterosexual men over age 18 with at least 1 female sex partner in the last 5 years. Demographics, relationship status and number of female partners were examined as predictors of condom use with the Mantel-Haenszel test for trend. RESULTS: Of 303 men married > 5 yrs., 125 (41%) had extramarital sexual partners. Percentage using condoms by relationship status and number of sex partners in past 5 yrs. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. Three-quarters of men with 6+ sexual partners did not use condoms. Condom use increased significantly in extramarital contacts with increasing number of partners. Singles lacked a trend. CONCLUSION: With the vast majority not using condoms for non-marital sex, this finding indicates a need for better HIV prevention education among persons applying to immigrate to the USA.
